Individual Therapy & Counseling in NJ
Individual therapy forms the heart of personalized treatment at Speranza Behavioral Health. One-on-one sessions with a licensed clinician create a private, supportive space for deep, lasting healing from addiction and mental health challenges.
What Is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy (also called individual counseling or psychotherapy) involves one-on-one sessions between a client and a licensed mental health professional or addiction counselor. Unlike group work, individual therapy is entirely personalized to the client's unique history, goals, diagnosis, and pace of progress.
From Our Clinical Director
Individual therapy is where the deeper, more personal work happens. Group is powerful, but some things need a private space — childhood wounds, grief, the shame that's hard to name out loud. The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a corrective experience for clients who've never had a safe, trusting connection. That consistency — the same therapist, the same hour, every week — is itself healing.

Who Is This Therapy For?
A client has spent years managing everyone else's needs — the parent, the partner, the employee — and has never had space to ask what they actually need. Underneath the substance use is a profound exhaustion and a quiet question: 'Who am I if I'm not performing for everyone else?'
In weekly individual sessions, their primary therapist creates a space where they don't have to perform. Slowly, they explore the experiences that shaped their patterns — the role they were assigned, the losses they never grieved. The work isn't about fixing them; it's about helping them meet themselves with honesty and compassion for the first time.
How Individual Therapy Works
At Speranza, every client in our PHP and IOP programs is assigned a primary therapist who is their consistent therapeutic relationship throughout treatment. The primary therapist conducts the initial clinical assessment, develops the individualized treatment plan, and meets with the client in weekly (or more frequent, depending on level of care) individual sessions.
Individual therapy at Speranza draws from multiple evidence-based modalities selected to fit each client's diagnosis and needs. This may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety or depression, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for emotional dysregulation, EMDR for trauma processing, Motivational Interviewing for ambivalence about change, or psychodynamic approaches for deeper exploratory work.
Sessions typically run 45–60 minutes and create a confidential space to explore personal history, childhood experiences, relationship patterns, grief, trauma, shame, and other deeply personal themes that may not be appropriate for group settings. The therapeutic relationship itself — built on trust, warmth, and non-judgment — is a core healing element.
Individual therapy sessions also serve as a place to integrate and personalize skills learned in group settings, address relapse warning signs, develop safety plans, prepare for family sessions, and set specific goals for the next stage of recovery.
For clients navigating addiction, individual therapy addresses the underlying drivers of substance use — trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship stress, or chronic pain — rather than only the surface behavior. This deeper work is what makes recovery sustainable, because lasting change requires understanding why the substance was needed in the first place.
Many clients use individual therapy to work through life transitions that overlap with mental health: career changes, grief and loss, relationship endings, parenting challenges, identity questions, and the search for meaning. A skilled therapist helps you navigate these transitions with greater clarity, resilience, and self-compassion, building the emotional foundation that supports long-term wellness.
Outpatient individual therapy is also available outside of our PHP and IOP programs for community members seeking weekly or bi-weekly counseling. Whether you're managing an ongoing condition, working through a specific challenge, or simply investing in your personal growth, our licensed clinicians provide the consistent, expert support that helps you move forward.
