ADHD is often misunderstood as a childhood-only condition that children 'outgrow' — this is incorrect. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting approximately 5% of adults and 7% of children. While symptoms may change across the lifespan, ADHD persists into adulthood for most individuals diagnosed in childhood — and many adults are diagnosed later in life when they finally understand why focus, organization, and impulse control have always been challenging. At Speranza Behavioral Health in Woodbury, NJ, we provide comprehensive ADHD evaluation and treatment for adolescents and adults across South Jersey.

Recognizing the signs of ADHD is the first step toward effective treatment. Inattentive symptoms include difficulty sustaining focus, frequent careless mistakes, trouble following through on instructions, disorganization, avoiding tasks that require sustained mental effort, losing things, forgetfulness, and easy distraction. Hyperactive-impulsive symptoms include restlessness, fidgeting, inability to stay seated, talking excessively, interrupting others, difficulty waiting turns, and acting without thinking. Many adults with ADHD internalize their struggles as personal failures — 'I'm just lazy' or 'I can't get it together' — when in fact these are symptoms of a neurobiological condition that responds to treatment.

ADHD presents in three main forms. Predominantly inattentive presentation (once called ADD) involves focus, organization, and follow-through difficulties without significant hyperactivity — and is the most underdiagnosed form, particularly in women and girls. Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation involves restlessness, impulsivity, and high activity. Combined presentation, the most common form, includes significant symptoms of both. Executive function challenges are central to all three — difficulty with planning, prioritization, working memory, emotional regulation, time management, and task initiation.

At Speranza Behavioral Health, our ADHD treatment begins with a thorough psychiatric and psychoeducational evaluation, including standardized rating scales, a detailed clinical interview, and often psychoeducational testing. We assess for co-occurring conditions including anxiety, depression, learning disorders, and substance use — which frequently accompany ADHD and can mimic or worsen its symptoms. Accurate diagnosis is essential, because ADHD shares symptoms with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and sleep disorders, and misdiagnosis leads to ineffective treatment.

Psychiatric medication management is often a highly effective component of ADHD treatment. Our psychiatrists carefully evaluate whether stimulant medications (such as methylphenidate or amphetamine-based medications) or non-stimulant medications (such as atomoxetine, guanfacine, or bupropion) are most appropriate based on your history, symptom profile, and any co-occurring conditions. For adults with a history of substance use, non-stimulant options may be preferred to reduce misuse risk. Medication is monitored closely and adjusted based on response — it is never one-size-fits-all.

Medication alone is rarely enough. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) adapted for ADHD helps clients build the executive function skills that medication doesn't teach: time management, prioritization, breaking overwhelming tasks into manageable steps, managing distractibility, and developing systems for organization. Behavioral coaching provides accountability and structure. Many clients find that the combination of medication and CBT produces the most complete functional improvement.

Emotional regulation is a significant but underrecognized part of ADHD. Many people with ADHD experience intense, rapid emotional reactions and rejection-sensitive dysphoria — deep emotional pain in response to perceived rejection or criticism. These emotional symptoms are neurological, not character flaws, and they respond to both medication and skills-based therapy including DBT techniques for emotion regulation.

ADHD frequently co-occurs with other conditions. Research suggests that a majority of adults with ADHD also have anxiety, depression, or a substance use disorder. Self-medication is common — many adults with undiagnosed ADHD use alcohol, cannabis, or stimulants to manage their symptoms. For these clients, our dual diagnosis program treats both the ADHD and the co-occurring condition simultaneously, because addressing one while ignoring the other rarely produces lasting improvement.

ADHD affects relationships and daily life in ways that benefit from direct attention. We offer family therapy and couples therapy to help loved ones understand ADHD as a neurobiological condition, improve communication, and develop strategies for navigating the organizational and emotional challenges ADHD brings to shared life. For students and employees, we provide guidance on accommodations and workplace strategies.

We offer ADHD treatment across multiple levels of care — from outpatient psychiatry and therapy to our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for individuals whose ADHD-related challenges have created significant functional impairment alongside co-occurring conditions. Speranza serves individuals with ADHD across all of South New Jersey — Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties — from our Woodbury location. We accept most major insurance and offer same-day assessments. If you or your loved one is struggling with focus, organization, or impulse control, effective treatment is available.
