How to Get Into Rehab in New Jersey: A Step-by-Step Guide

For many people, the idea of "going to rehab" is simultaneously the most hopeful and the most terrifying thing they've ever considered. The process can seem opaque, complicated, and full of barriers that make it easy to postpone. In reality, getting into a treatment program in New Jersey — especially at a quality facility like Speranza Behavioral Health — is a straightforward process that our admissions team handles with you every step of the way.

This guide demystifies the rehab admission process so that nothing about it can become an excuse to wait.

Confidential help is just one call away.

Step 1: Make the Decision and Pick Up the Phone

This is the hardest step — and the most important. Everything else is logistics.

You don't need to have:

  • All your paperwork ready
  • Your insurance information memorized
  • A plan for work or family coverage
  • Complete certainty that you're "ready"

You just need to make the call. Our admissions team will handle everything else.

Call (866) 814-0126 — available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.

Step 2: The Initial Phone Assessment

When you call, you'll speak with a trained admissions counselor — not a sales representative. The initial call typically takes 15–30 minutes and covers:

  • What you're struggling with — what substance(s), how long, how much, your current situation
  • Any medical or psychiatric history — relevant conditions, current medications
  • Your living situation and support system — to help determine the right level of care
  • Insurance information — if you have it; if not, we'll discuss other options
  • Your questions — ask anything about our programs, our staff, the process

The goal of this call is to understand your situation and begin identifying the right treatment pathway for you.

Step 3: Insurance Verification

While you're on the phone or immediately after, our team verifies your insurance benefits at no cost to you. We contact your insurance company to confirm:

  • Whether PHP, IOP, and outpatient services are covered
  • Your deductible, copay/coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum
  • Whether prior authorization is required and how to obtain it
  • Your in-network status with Speranza

We work with all major NJ insurance plans including Aetna, Cigna, UHC, Blue Cross, Horizon NJ Health, AmeriHealth, and Medicaid/NJ FamilyCare. Learn more about insurance coverage →

If you don't have insurance or are underinsured, we'll discuss alternative funding options including Medicaid enrollment, state-funded treatment, and payment plans.

Step 4: Clinical Assessment

Before any treatment begins, you'll complete a comprehensive clinical assessment with one of our licensed clinicians. This is a confidential, non-judgmental conversation that typically takes 60–90 minutes and covers:

  • Substance use history — substances used, patterns, history of treatment
  • Mental health history — psychiatric diagnoses, medications, trauma history
  • Medical history — relevant health conditions
  • Social history — family, employment, housing, legal history
  • Strengths and recovery capital — what supports you have and what you're working toward

This assessment uses the ASAM Criteria — the clinical gold standard — to determine the appropriate level of care (PHP, IOP, outpatient) and create your individualized treatment plan.

Step 5: Prior Authorization (If Required)

Some insurance plans require prior authorization — advance approval — for PHP and sometimes IOP. Our insurance and admissions team handles this entirely on your behalf, submitting the clinical documentation required and following up with the insurance company directly. Most prior authorizations are resolved within 24–48 hours.

Step 6: Admission and Your First Day

Once clinical and financial clearances are in place, you're admitted. Here's what your first day looks like:

Arrival and orientation: You'll arrive at our Woodbury, NJ facility, meet your treatment team, and receive an orientation to the program — schedule, expectations, rules, and how each component of your program works.

Medical check-in: A nurse or physician's assistant reviews your health status, medication needs, and any withdrawal monitoring required.

Meet your primary therapist: Your assigned individual therapist will introduce themselves and schedule your first one-on-one session.

Group therapy begins: You'll join your first clinical group — your primary treatment community of peers in recovery.

Daily schedule: You'll receive your full daily schedule and program materials.

Most people find the first day simultaneously overwhelming and a profound relief. The decision is made. The weight of hiding, maintaining, and managing addiction is lifted. The work of recovery — supported by a professional clinical team — begins.

What to Bring to Rehab

For outpatient programs (PHP and IOP), you go home each night. Bring:

  • Photo ID and insurance card
  • A list of current medications (with dosages)
  • Comfortable clothing for group sessions
  • A notebook and pen
  • Any comfort items for group (water bottle, etc.)

Rehab Admission FAQs

Can I get into rehab the same day I call? In many cases, yes. Same-day or next-day admission is often possible for IOP. PHP may require 24–48 hours for insurance authorization.

Will my employer know? No. Treatment is protected by HIPAA. You may be eligible for FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) leave for treatment — HR departments handle this as a medical leave without disclosing the nature of treatment.

What if I'm nervous about going? Call us and tell us. Our admissions team will walk you through everything, answer your questions, and can connect you with someone in our clinical team before your start date if that helps.
